About the Presentation

Research has shown the importance of solidarity networks and protecting direct victims, as well as those who protect victims of gender-based violence who may become victims of Isolating Gender Violence (IGV). Within this context, and aligned with the EU-funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie research project “UniswithHeart,” this project studies the challenges to social movements participating in the creation of networks of support within academia. By examining social actors engaged and resistances faced, findings show that survivors created networks and support centers by knitting allies with different communities, including committed researchers, and asked their institutions for transparency. Our findings suggest how university landscapes have changed during the last years and decades in terms of protection and support. Although there is much more work to be done, the role of student movements is key to supporting survivors and achieving institutional change.  The findings suggest progress within academia requires stronger connections between student networks of support and administration because they enable survivors to break their silence and to move forward in their personal and professional lives.

About the Speaker

Ana Vidu is Marie Sklodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley (Sociology Department) and is also affiliated with the Deusto Law School in Spain. She is conducting research for the “UniswithHeart” project with a focus on mechanisms of prevention, action, and support against sexual harassment in academia. She co-founded the first peer-to-peer support network in Spain (2013), "Solidarity Network of Victims of Gender Violence in Universities" (2013), which was recognized as a ‘Best Practice’ by the Women's Institute of the Spanish government(currently called MeToo Universidad, part of the World Me Too University Network). Her research on gender-based violence, sexual consent, and the isolation of gender violence has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals and presented at international scientific conferences. At Berkeley, she recently served as a co-chair of the DEI Committee of the BPA.

Presented and moderated by Daniel Kim, HSSA President.
